Redrafting the MLB Playoffs
Redrafting the MLB Playoffs
While MLB slumbers, the winter leagues in Central and South America are heating up. In the Dominican Professional Baseball League, for example, the regular season concludes on December 23 with the postseason scheduled for January. One of the most intriguing wrinkles of winter league baseball is redrafting for the playoffs. The teams that make it in are able to draft players off the rosters of eliminated clubs.
If MLB had this rule, Mike Trout would participate in the playoffs every year (as opposed to real life, in which he hasn’t played in October since 2014). Winter leagues just have one-year player contracts, so after the regular season ends for teams out of contention, they have no hold over their players. Obviously, that’s not the case in MLB. Could you imagine if the Braves drafted Max Scherzer for the playoffs, made him throw 150 pitches on three days rest, turned his shoulder into pudding, and then sent him back to the Nationals?
No, redrafting could never work in MLB… but it makes for a fun thought experiment! We’ll transport ourselves back in time to the end of September and conduct a two-round draft. Each of the 16 playoff teams can select any player they want from the rosters of the 14 non-playoff teams. The Dodgers are on the clock!
Round One
- Dodgers select Jacob deGrom, Mets starting pitcher. You thought it would be Trout, didn’t you? As tempting as he may be, deGrom makes more sense for the Dodgers’ roster. He would have taken the ball in Game One of the Wild Card Series instead of Walker Buehler.

- Rays select Mike Trout, Angels center fielder. The best player in baseball doesn’t fall far. Any team would gladly make roster space for a living legend.
